A few years ago when Hurricane Mitch swept across the Yucatan Peninsula, it did a lot more damage than just running a few Cancun vacation deals. In addition to the damage done to buildings and structures it also carried away thousands of tons of beach sand along hotel row. Since then the Mexican government has spent millions of dollars on brining in sand to repair the beaches, but erosion is still a problem and some hotels have hired their own consultants to determine how to protect their million dollar properties. If you plan on taking a trip to Cancun soon, make sure there is enough sand available to relax, build a castle and bury your feet in. It is rare, but some hotels will allow you to rent sand from another nearby beach to insure your vacation is what you had in mind.
