In the world of today, people especially in rich countries become older and older. If you think of the fact that 100 years ago people had a average age of approximately 60 years old, you can see that this has increased drastically. Living longer can be a good thing, however there is also a downside on becoming older. The chance that dementia will strike is 2.5% when you hit the age of 75 This percentage will double every 5 years.When you are ninety the chance is almost 40%. Dementia is not the same as Alzheimers disease. The difference between dementia and alzheimers lays in the fact that Alzheimers a type of dementia. Eventually someone with Alzheimer disease will start showing cognitive disfunctioning and when this happen you can say that the person is demented.
