Treatments for Men with an Overactive Bladder

An overactive bladder condition can effect anyone at any age.  It is a condition characterized by the inability to control urination.  In older men particularly, an overactive bladder may be a signal that something is seriously wrong with the prostate.  If the prostate is enlarged, it may squeeze the urethra, causing the constant urination urges and uncontrollable leakage.  However, and enlarged prostate is not the only condition that can cause an overactive bladder.  Incontinence may also be caused by a nervous system not functioning properly.

There are several treatments for overactive bladder.  Some include:

  • Biofeedback
  • Avoiding liquid intake certain times of the day
  • Scheduled bathroom breaks throughout the day
  • Intermittent catheterization
  • Prescribed medication and/or surgery
  • Bladder training
  • Increased fiber intake
  • Healthy diet, exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight.
