The Three Moods of an Investigative Cop

Contrary to popular belief, contrary to what you learn in grade school, the cops are not here to help people. They are put on this Earth to arrest people. Period. Show me a cop and I’ll show you someone who is always on alert to find someone doing something wrong so they can arrest them. And yes, I could have this opinion because I’m a DUI lawyer, but I doubt it.

The one way to thwart the efforts of the cops is to teach people about their rights, teach people what the true motivation of the cops is, and teach people how to appropriately deal with the cops. This includes several things – not admitting anything, remaining polite, and saying as little as possible.

Thing is, though, when you start doing what you should do, what you are 100% legally allowed to do, the cops don’t like it. In fact, they hate it. And they will show their hate by going through three different moods, generally. Here they are.

The first mood of the cops is buddy-buddy. This is generally what they are like when they first meet you. They want to get you talking, and they know the best way to do that is to get you to trust them, to think that even if you tell them one small thing that they will look past it and let you go. They’ll do this until you tell them the five magic words “I’m not answering that question.”

Then they’ll move on to mood two. This mood is generally the complete opposite of mood one. It is the “bad cop” of the good cop/bad cop routine. The point of bad cop is to intimidate you into doing what they want, to get you to succumb to authority. Don’t do it. As long as you are nice they won’t do anything to you.

Finally, they’ll move on to the third mood, the disappointed parent. They’ll try to guilt you into talking. They’ll say things like “if you haven’t done anything wrong they you shouldn’t have anything to hide.” Don’t fall for it. Again, they are just trying to get you to talk.

If you start to feel uncomfortable at any time and want to stop the conversation just say “I’m done talking and I want to speak to my DUI defense attorney.” It’s not hard to deal with the three moods of a cop. You just have to know how to deal with them.
