The evolution of low flow shower heads

The shower head industry has looked for ways to conserve water for quite some time now, which has resulted in an evolution of low flow shower heads. The idea was there from the beginning – save water. But the method of doing that has had it’s rough times. Nowadays they’ve gotten it pretty close to perfected.

The first version of the low flow concept was to reduce the amount of water flowing by having less nozzles for the water to get out of. Seemed like a good idea, and the idea made it to market. Why didn’t this last? With less holes and the same amount of pressure, that equals out to more pressure per hole, so the water came blasting out of them, sometimes to the point where it would hurt your skin taking a shower.

Customers didn’t enjoy this so the strategy was switched to an aerated approach. Air was injected into the water to make it feel like more water and desperse it so it didn’t feel like needles hitting your back. They air/water mixture went problematic often and the air cooled the water tempature before reaching the person.

So, the third version was made the way, say, any normal thinking human would have made it the first time. They are now spread out with more holes not causing a lot of built up pressure and using full faced patterned spraying. It took them a while to get there, but it’s definitely worth picking up a new one for.
