The Art of Decorative Plates

A friend recently was kind enough to give me a Satsuma plate to add to my growing collection.  She knows that I enjoy displaying hand painted enamel pieces based on the mythology of Japan.  Although I have no Buddhist connections, the handsome artwork celebrating the origins of the religion is some of my favorite collectible material.  I have to say that this particular piece has captured my imagination because it includes dragon images that seem to be rising from either some type of pipe or incense burning device.  It is eerily beautiful and it makes me long to be able to talk to the original artist to find out what everything actually represents.  Working out my own interpretations of these beautiful decorative plates is part of what I enjoy about the hobby though.
