Summer Snake Protection

Summer is a fantastic time when the weather is right, school and college is out, and everything lines up for camping, family vacations, and other outdoor activities.  While it’s important not to let fear override the fun that summer has to offer, it can be a very good idea to think ahead to snake protection so if you run into a rattlesnake or copperhead, you’ll be prepared to handle it.

There are many different ways to protect yourself from venomous snakes.  The first is knowledge.  Be aware of what snakes are in your area and what their habits are.  If you see a snake, give it space.  Most snakes can only strike half their body length, so giving a snake 8-10 feet of space is often enough to get by.

There are also several types of clothing designed to help protect from snake bites, including gloves, gaiters, chaps, and boots.  Have a first aid kit, and always know where the nearest hospital is, just in case a bite needs to be treated.  If you take these steps, you’ll have a much better chance of a safe and worry free summer adventure.
