Power rack is an essential piece of training equipment in the gym. If you want to take your leg workout seriously you need to squat and for squatting you need a power rack! It improves you workout much more than conventional squat stands. Safety factor is increased which is always important, especially for performing squats with serious weights. With it you don’t even need a spotter.
But it seems there is certain confusion amongst many beginners and quite a bit of serious athletes about various names that are used for it in the gym. To just name a few popular ones: a squat rack, a squat stand, a power cage, and a squat cage. Usually in jargon, these can be and are used interchangeably for one and the same thing. However, there are slight differences in the real World of gym training machines.
Power racks in difference to squat racks have adjustable side catchers to stop the weight in case you fall down. Adjustability of those catchers increases versatility and range of motion. You can use it to perform partial movements, like partial deadlifts. Also, they have cage like constructions which are more stable than the ones in racks.
In a nutshell – power rack is more powerful, that’s it!
