Even though many people out there – especially across the United State and Canada – think that farmers are often times uneducated, ignorant country bumpkins the reality could not be farther from the truth and the fact remains that today’s modern day farmer is not just out there growing crops and pushing a bale of hay – he also must be a shrewd entrepreneur and a rather savvy business man. While in the past, a farmer may have been able to get by simply by owning a sizable plot of land and by knowing how to plant corn and watching it grow, today’s farmer must also be able to navigate an ever complicated and competitive world. In fact, the farmers of yore did not have to compete with foreign growers and distributors and, when they did compete at home with domestic competitions, it was usually other small scale, local farmers: not the large scale, agricultural giants that are notorious for putting the mom and pop farm out of business.
