I was recently sitting and drinking a nice cold caffeinated beverage from my Starbucks Venti Tumbler when I was struck by a disturbing thought. What if the government decided to tax our coffee? They haven’t declared drinking coffee a sin yet but how far off can it be? Look at what has happened to every other “sinful” thing sold in the country. There are outrageously high taxes on tobacco products and alcohol. What if a study came out that said coffee was just terrible for you? Would we have a Boston Coffee Party? Would we just accept it as another way of being protected from ourselves? There might just be enough coffee drinkers that someone would actually stand up and complain.
I stared down at my cold cup of caramel colored goodness and pondered the state of our society. Then I finished it and got a refill.
