How to Clean Your Patio Umbrella

If you are anything like me, then you’ve probably left your patio umbrella outside 24/7 this summer. Now it’s probably looking a little worse for wear with bird poop, rotting leaves and berries. You can’t store it away for the winter in such a filthy state, so here are some simple instructions to make cleaning that big umbrella a breeze.

  1. Take some old towels, a blanket or a tarp and lay it on the ground to form a protective surface on which to wash the umbrella. It needs to be an area as big as the umbrella is when it is fully open.
  2. Open up the umbrella and lay it on the towels. The umbrellas shouldn’t be touching the unprotected ground at all.
  3. Hose down your umbrella until it is wet all over. You might need some to help you rotate the umbrella while you hose to make sure it doesn’t roll off the towels.
  4. Fill a bucket with warm soapy water (just like you would if you were washing your car) and scrub the umbrella with a cloth or sponge.
  5. Rinse the soapy water off with the hose. Make sure you rinse it well so no soapy residue is left on the umbrella.
  6. Stand the patio umbrella back up in its base or stand. Open it up and let it dry in the sun.
