Hiking Shoes vs. Hiking Boots

Most people automatically think about buying a hiking boot if they are going to do a lot of hiking but this may not be the best choice. Hiking shoes have some significant advantages over hiking boots in certain situations.

Hiking shoes shine when you are doing treks on easy terrain and shorter day trips. They are generally lighter than boots and more comfortable due to the additional flex and give. They are often made of breathable material that will keep your feet cooler as well.

If you are carrying a heavy load (like a full backpack), or hiking on rough terrain, or for extended trips across days then hiking boots will likely be a better choice. A high cut boot that come up beyond your ankle will also provide ankle support and prevent you from rolling or twisting your ankle as easily as a shoe.
