The bottom of the hiking shoe, the outer-sole, is going to take most of the wear and tear of the shoe and so it needs to be made of strong, durable material. Look for a good, deep tread that will give you good traction on a variety of terrains, and a non slip surface to help you keep on your feet as you walk on slippery surfaces.
Weight is really important in a hiking shoe; some like heavy shoes while others like a lighter shoe. Weight can be determined by the materials from which the shoe is made. The preferred weight of the shoe is a matter of personal choice, so it is a good idea to try on a wide variety of styles and weights of hiking shoes before you decide on the ones to buy. When you are on the trail, it’s too late to think you should have bought those other shoes!
