Diets based on limiting carbohydrates have been around for decades. One of the first was the Stillman Diet which was popularized in a book by Dr. Stillman back in the 1960’s. The idea behind a low carb diet is that some people are more susceptible to gaining weight when they consume foods high in carbohydrates than other people are. For these people limiting the amount of carbs in there daily diet seems to help with weight loss.
One of the controversies about no carb foods is that many of them can be high in fat content. The vast majority of foods that have no carbs are meat products. If you are not careful you can really load up on saturated animal fats by eating a diet based on meats. You can get around this problem by picking foods like turkey, chicken, and wild game as the basis of your meals. Beef can be low in fat but you need to pick the cuts that are lean and stay away from things like hamburger and untrimmed steaks.
