Grinding Coffee for French Press

Making the decision to grind your own beans is a big step in the quest to produce a great cup of coffee. With that said, there isn’t just one type of grind that is suitable for all of the different types of coffee drinks. While brewing an espresso based drink may require a relatively fine grind, grinding beans for use in the French Press requires a completely different grind; a uniform large particle size. The reason for this is that a fine particle size will tend to create over-extraction (bitterness) and will also create sludge in the bottom of the finished cup, as French Press filters have a relatively large mesh. The last thing you want to swallow are a bunch of coffee grounds; therefore, it’s important to adhere to the suggestion above.
If you’re interested in achieving a uniform and consistent grind, it is recommended to purchase a conical burr type grinder. While these grinders aren’t necessarily cheap, they are the only type that will produce a wide array of different types of grinds in a consistent way.
