Grand Home Decoration – Give the “Old Look” to a Spacious Hallway

Being creative is the key to achieve grand home decoration without spending a lot of money. With the right colors and the right coat rail you can give your hallway the feel of an old country residence if it is spacious enough. Here are a few simple and inexpensive ideas that will help you re-create the style.

Herringbone flooring next to a broad staircase adds to the look, and clever paint effects will give it bags of character as well as a rustic, aged appearance. When it comes to colors, add warm, faded and lived-in tones. A rich brown carpet could run up the stairs, while the floor in maple wood could bring soft, honey tones to the room. Treat the walls with a thick wash of dark point over a soft cream. Rub it away, to create that aged effect and make the plasterwork look raw and nicely textured.

Distressed paintwork can create an instantly aged effect on the walls, with the mottled quality breaking up the big expanse of wall and also providing plenty of decoration. To add to this, paint a striking head or other related motif directly onto the wall, to make it look like an original fresco!

The artistic walls, warm wooden floor and tall, wide dimensions are the key assets of these types of halls – accessories are not really needed. The only extra you could add would be a full length coat rail that would provide lots of storage. You can make a rail with the right look by painting a length of wood with gloss or satinwood paint, screwing hooks to it then fixing the whole thing to the wall.

The warm maple wood floor can be reclaimed from an old printing works; sand it, treat it accordingly and you will end up with the right result. Buying salvaged flooring is relatively inexpensive and a great way to pick up something with real character. Sanding can work wonder on most solid wood floors, so don’t be put off by a dirty surface!

As you can see, when it comes to your home decoration a little effort and creativity can make your spacious hall change from average to grand without costing you a lot of money.
