Glass balls for decoration

A simple glass globe can be used to great effect when it comes to decoration your home, yard, garden or lawn. The indoor glass ball varieties are usually called friendship balls and the ones for exterior use are known as yard globes or (strangely) witch balls, which have some vague spiritual connections.

The outside glass balls are usually 10 to 12 inches in diameter and are located in the optimum position of the garden to catch the sunlight which they then reflect with great brilliance. It is better if they are kept out of the wind as it is such a shame for them to topple and shatter. Chrome and polished balls are also used outdoors but glass is preferred more. These outside balls are an up-side-down version of the interior hanging variety. Garden balls are supported on a metal or ceramic pedestal stand which is discrete to allow the brilliance of the sphere to be noticed rather than the stand itself.

The inside glass balls are usually 4 to 6 inches in diameter and are hung from the ceiling or high cross beams. They are attractive in high rooms such as entrance hallways or hanging near a brightly lit window (provided they are high enough to prevent a person bumping into them).

On a smaller scale 2 inch diameter glass balls, beautifully colored and decorated are used to adorn the Christmas tree in December. These are made from very thin glass and can be bought singly or in presentation boxes (usually of 12 balls) which make great Xmas gifts. A set of clear glass balls used on a tree containing colored fairy lights adds a great sparkle effect with the light glinting off the spherical surfaces of the balls. The overall effect is a festive luminescence of true beauty creating a Christmas scene that will be remembered forever.
