The other time to hire a garage door repair man is when the door opener is not cooperating. Some adjustments can be made by reading manuals, but internal workings and selection of garage door opener parts are not wise to tackle unless you are familiar with how the opener is made.
Garage door repair is part of the live of anyone who owns a garage. So be smart and if the job is out of your league, admit it before the door is half way disassembled and you have wasted most of your day off.
