Water damage repair is one of the most depressing things a home owner can go through in their lifetime, I know, I helped my father piece his house back together a few years ago, it was a night mare. His wasn’t even a natural disaster; it was a totally preventable hot water hose break. In less than two hours it did tens of thousands in damage, and a few of the things we did right away made all the difference in the world as far as what got fixed and how.
For Your Insurance
The first thing we did was get a dehumidifier (or ten) in the house and blowing. Just squeezing the water out the door isn’t enough, you will have to get it out of the air as well. Then we called the insurance company to check the home owners insurance policy. They appreciated that even though we weren’t the homeowners, we were doing all we could to prevent as much water damage as possible. That made them much more willing when it came to water damage repair, so bear that in mind when you walk through your door and find three inches of water. Record everything, they might not be as appreciative as dad’s company was, and keep all the receipts.
Things You Can’t Repair
Like it or not, you cannot fix your kitchen cabinets. If they have been damaged, they have to go. Carpets, as well, will not be savable in most cases, as they mold almost instantly, and water damage repair on them is more costly than they are worth. In flood conditions, remember that you may also be dealing with biological waste and need to be very careful of what you are fishing around in. Drywall will likely also be shot, and not repairable, meaning the whole area will have to be re sheet rocked and spackled and then painted.
