Dog Kennels and Accessories

Size is all important for anyone considering buying a dog kennel.

The giant-sized Mastiff or Great Dane will need a much larger, stronger dog kennel than that required for a tiny Yorkshire terrier or Chihuahua.

And the dog who never sleeps anywhere but in his kennel outside, will probably need a much more expensive one than the dog who sleeps in a bed somewhere inside the house.

He will also benefit greatly from a run, atttached to his kennel… rather like the patio outside the living room of the house occupied by his owner. If he can get in an out of his kennel and still be secure and happy, then he will work better when called upon to herd farm animals, or guard the premises.

Kennel accessories

Working dogs are not normally pampered in the way indoor pets are. But there are still a few interesting kennel accessories on the market. He might enjoy having a portable (battery-operated) radio, to provide soothing music as he drifts off the sleep.

In the winter, a hot-water bottle (suitably covered to avoid scaulding him) will keep out the chill.

Also currently available is a strong, doggie tray that’s just large enough to accommodate his food and water bowls. Then Master Dog can have his meals served in comfort and style.

Elderly and disabled

The kennel with an ‘upstairs’ section might pose a problem for elderly and disabled dogs. Fortunately, the problem is not insurmountable.

A vast selection of ramps, steps, wheels and harnesses can be obtained quite reasonably.

Courses are also available for owners to give therapeutic massage and physiotherapy to arthritic limbs while the dog is lying down in his kennel.

Holiday homes for dogs

Picture 25Holiday homes for dogs have come a long way since the idea started some years ago. Some of these establishments provide five-star kennels for their residents. Luxury bedrooms with all mod-cons, beauty parlours, gourmet food, swimming pools, and gardens in which to stroll at leisure.

They have beautifully-decorated rooms, complete with TV and fitted wardrobes in which to hang up collars, leads, harnesses, raincoats and anything else they may require during their stay.

For the dog-about-town, one hotel provides a webcam so that owners can watch himwhile they are apart…. or , with the right equipment, even talk to him on Skype?

How could any dog-owner not want to put his pet in luxury accommodation like this?

And how could any self-respecting dog not want to be such a pampered guest?
