There are several distinguishing characteristics of a Chesterfield sofa which make it instantly recognizable. Most often you will find three things that make the Chesterfield sofa unique. The one thing that nearly every Chesterfield sofa has is button-down fabric which gives the sofa a kind of dimpled look. Most often you will also find the sofas with arms and backs that are the same height. This mark of a Chesterfield sofa is almost considered a must in order to be classified as a Chesterfield. The third design feature that is usually found on the sofas is rolled arms with some type of hardware embellishing the front edge of the arms.
The design of the Chesterfield sofa is widely accepted as being credited to a renowned cabinet maker of the 18th century. This cabinet maker was supposedly commissioned by the fourth Earl of Chesterfield to create a piece of furniture that will allow a gentleman to sit upright and proper while still being comfortable.
