Choosing The Best Wine

Types of wines are divided into classifications. All wines are classified according to where the grapes
were grown and the primary type of grape. Depending on what region the grapes are grown in, dictates the
kind of flavor and texture it will have. Grapes grown in a warm and wet climate will have a different
flavor from those grown in a cooler and drier season. This is the reason for some wine labels and years
being more valuable than other wines.

The flavorful red wines come from black grapes. They are processed by being fermented whole with
their skin and pipes intact. The flavor is a light or sweet, mellow or refreshing one. The common
types of red wine are:

Barbera: This grape is similar to Merlot. Its not quite as well known as others. It goes well with
tomato base Italian dishes. It has a silky texture and a taste similar to black cherry or plum fruit.

Cabernet Sauvignon: This has a full-bodied flavor and is one of the best varieties of grapes. Its
paired with Cabaernet Franc or Merot. Red meats go good with this wine.

Merlot: This wine is often referred to as easy to drink. It has a rough, tannic flavor and goes well
with all kinds of foods.

Pinot Noiromato: These grapes are somewhat difficult to grow. Dishes made with chicken, lamb or
salmon go well with this wine. It has a delicate and fresh taste and has a fruity aroma with earthy notes.

Syrah or Shiraz: This red wine goes well with dishes made from beef, steak, or stew. The flavor is
one thats fruity with black pepper and roast meat overtones.

All white wines begin with colorless grape juice. They are made from white or black grapes and
can range in flavor from very dry to sweet and golden. There are five main types of white wines.

Chardonnay: This is a popular grape and can be made into a sparkling or still wine. It is a wide-bodied
wine with a velvety citrus flavor. It has a buttery tone much like coconut, toast, toffee or vanilla.

Gewurztraminer: Wine made from this aromatic grape is often paired with Asian food, pork, and sausage dishes. The flavor is a fruity one with an aroma of allspice, lychee, peach and rose.

Muscat: This describes a variety of grapes. They are best by themselves and not paired with any foods.
Its a sweet wine with a grapefruit aroma.

Riesling: These improve with age and have a fresh taste. They go well with chicken, fish, and pork.
Riesling wines are light and have a fresh apple aroma.
