If you play chess you will be familiar with many different set types and styles. Sets can be made from marble, wood, plastic and other man made materials. Wooden sets are my favorite and I prefer the classic Staunton style which is probably the most recognized chess set available today. Usually ebony and rosewood are used and the carving on individual pieces is quite magnificent. The best set size is 4 inch high. The king is the reference when height of a set is advertised and the other pieces are in proportion to the king. Other set types are collectible and many are themed on TV characters or world historic figures but these sets would be for display only. The Staunton Chess set offers durability whilst playing and also has a classic look and is the de-facto standard used in tournament play. If you are thinking of buying a set then choose Staunton instead of a themed set that will soon go out of fashion.
