One of the most common game animals in North America is the whitetail deer. It is estimated to have a population of more than 30 million. This deer is named because due to the white underside of its tail, which will lift up like a white flag when frightened or running. It is also a very popular animal for most hunters across all of the United States. There are actually only four states in the continental US that do not have a whitetail deer-hunting season. As scientists study these deer, they actually continue to break them down into further sub-species; this includes the larger deer from the Midwest or the smallest Key deer, which live in Florida. Some hunters do stalk and hunt moving deer, but the majority chooses to hunt from a tree-stand.
Some hunters will even travel about the country hunting different types of whitetail deer. One of the more difficult to successfully hunt and kill is the Coues deer from the high desert areas of northern Mexico, some of New Mexico, and southern Arizona. This deer is said to have developed extremely sharp sense and a greater sense of wariness than other deer. It has been nicknamed the Grey Ghost based on its ability to quickly disappear. Most Coues live in areas more than three thousand feet above sea level in deep forests, hills and canyons.
Thought difficult prey for any hunter, the whitetail presents an even bigger challenge for an archer. It takes a great amount of perseverance, patience and hard work to successfully hunt deer with a bow and arrow. This is especially true for the Coues since they spend much of their time in an area with little or no trees that are suitable for placing hunting stands. Once spotted from a distance, the hunter will need to get within shooting range to the deer quite carefully and winds will carry their scent quite easily to the deer. Many archers believe that this hunting is the most satisfying as it take the most skill and hard work. Perfect your hunting skills with PSE compound bows or Excalibur bow.
