You figure that there has to be some measure of commitment to the sport of golf if you go ahead and install a synthetic lawn putting green in your backyard. Although it may initially seem that the cost far outweighs any possible benefit that you might get back, but as a pursuit that you are going to carry on for years, the cost is going to become inconsequential over the long term.
A small putting or chipping area in the backyard would provide a valuable resource to use as you hone your game. The more use you get out of the area the lower the cost will seem. Certainly it will lower the cost compared to the amount spent in fuel costs driving to the local golf course or driving range.
